Veolia Vape Recycling Initiative
Promoting Sustainability and Responsible Waste Management
In recent years, the disposal of vapes and e-cigarettes has become a pressing environmental concern. With over 143 million vapes discarded annually, the improper disposal of these products poses health and safety risks, as well as potential fire hazards.
As the popularity of vaping continues to rise, the associated waste generated from vapes and e-cigarettes has become a significant concern. The improper disposal of these products not only poses health and safety risks but also contributes to environmental degradation.
The lithium content found in vaping materials further contributes to environmental challenges. To address these issues and promote sustainability, Veolia has taken a proactive step by launching a new recycling initiative aiming to facilitate the collection, transport, and recycling of vapes, extracting valuable materials such as lithium, cobalt, nickel, and manganese.
Vape Recycling Initiative
Veolia's vape recycling initiative offers an innovative solution to the growing problem of vape and e-cigarette waste. By establishing a streamlined collection and recycling process, Veolia aims to extract valuable materials from these products, such as lithium, cobalt, nickel, and manganese. These materials can then be repurposed for various applications, including the production of batteries for electric vehicles.
To ensure the safe handling and transportation of vapes and e-cigarettes, Veolia provides retailers with individual containers of vermiculite. Vermiculite is a mineral that minimizes the fire risks associated with lithium-ion batteries, effectively safeguarding the materials during storage and transport. By implementing these measures, Veolia promotes responsible waste management practices while mitigating potential hazards.
Benefits of Vape Recycling
Veolia's recycling initiative offers several notable benefits for both the environment and the economy. By recycling vapes and e-cigarettes, valuable materials can be recovered and reused, reducing the need for extracting raw resources. For example, recycling just ten tonnes of lithium from these products could supply enough material to produce batteries for approximately 1,200 electric cars.
In addition to conserving resources, vape recycling significantly reduces CO₂ emissions. The production of one tonne of lithium from ore emits around nine tonnes of CO₂. By recycling lithium from vapes, Veolia can save up to 72 tonnes of CO₂ emissions compared to the conventional extraction process. This reduction in emissions contributes to combating climate change and promoting sustainable

The Environmental Impact of Vapes and E-cigarettes
The increasing number of discarded vapes and e-cigarettes has raised alarm bells due to their adverse effects on the environment. These products contain various components that can be harmful if not properly disposed of, including lithium-ion batteries. When disposed of in regular waste streams, these batteries can pose significant risks, such as fires and explosions.
Moreover, the lithium content in these batteries contributes to environmental concerns. The extraction of lithium from ore is a resource-intensive process that results in the emission of approximately nine tonnes of CO₂ per tonne of lithium produced. Considering that more sustainable alternatives exist, it is crucial to explore recycling options that can reduce emissions and conserve valuable resources.
