Steaming Compost Piles

What is composting?

Composting is nature's way of recycling. Composting biodegrades organic waste (i.e. food waste, manure, leaves, grass trimmings, paper, wood etc.) turning it into a valuable fertiliser and we recover green waste from many of the communities we serve.

More and more Local Authorities are extending garden waste collection and composting schemes to help fulfil regulatory targets and reduce and recycle more organic waste.

We operate a number of centralised composting schemes that turn waste from domestic, commercial and horticultural sources into an organic peat-free soil conditioner and other products for commercial sale.

We collect green waste from business operations, civic amenity sites or through separate kerbside collections, ensuring minimal contamination of the waste material.  The waste then undergoes a composting process in one of our purpose built composting facilities, which takes nearly six months.

For those areas where less organic waste is produced, there are still measures which can help to reduce the amount of food waste and green waste sent to landfill.  We are involved in a number of initiatives to encourage residents to use up leftover food, as well as supporting the drive to increase home composting.

Open Windrow Composting Facilities

Veolia operates five Open Windrow Composting sites in the UK, processing over 100,000 tonnes of green and garden wastes each year.

All our facilities are PAS-100 and Quality Protocol certified and permitted to treat green and garden wastes, to be transformed into over 50,000 tonnes of compost each year.

The green waste is processed over 12 weeks.  Incoming waste is checked for contamination, shredded, formed into windrows and regularly turned to optimise the natural composting process.  Rainwater at the sites is stored and can be used in periods of dry weather to add moisture.  Finally, the product is screened to a range of grades for agricultural and domestic use.

The composted material is trademarked Pro-Grow and available across the UK.
