Veolia wins the Healthcare Supplier of the Year award
  • Award recognises £71 million of low carbon energy upgrades at five major hospitals that will reduce NHS annual carbon emissions by 11,865 tonnes CO2e, as part of Veolia’s Green Up strategic programme.

  • The schemes use an innovative 'whole building' methodology - a holistic approach based on how facilities and the energy delivery systems interact, while enhancing patient care, and are backed by use of the latest low carbon technologies.

  • Veolia's decarbonisation of healthcare includes the management of complex waste for over 100 hospitals and follows the waste hierarchy to maximise recycling and reduce carbon.

Veolia, Europe’s local decarbonising energy leader, has won the flagship award for Healthcare Supplier of the Year from the Institute of Healthcare Engineering and Estate Management (IHEEM). The award recognises the diverse range of services that the specialist energy teams can provide, helping hospitals reach their carbon reduction targets whilst delivering affordable, low-carbon energy efficiency upgrades as part of Veolia’s Green Up strategic programme.

For over 50 years, Veolia has supported the NHS by delivering a wide range of on-site energy management and FM services. More recently the company has managed a total investment of over £71 million for major carbon reducing energy projects at five hospitals working through the Public Sector Decarbonisation Scheme (PSDS). These upgrades will reduce annual carbon emissions by 11,865 tonnes CO2e.

The schemes use an innovative 'whole building' methodology - a holistic approach based on how facilities and the energy delivery systems interact, while enhancing patient care. The upgrades are backed by use of the latest developments in solar panels, air and ground source heat pumps, de-steaming, insulation, controls and LED lighting to ensure the systems are practical and provide long-term energy security.

Delivered on working hospital sites, the Veolia teams work in close partnership with the hospitals’ estate teams to ensure the upgrades are effectively planned and installed with minimal impact on patient care. Veolia guarantees delivery and service quality and supports the sites on a 24/7 basis through long-term (typically 15 year) service contracts.

Veolia decarbonisation of the healthcare industry

Veolia's decarbonisation of healthcare includes the management of waste for over 100 hospitals to maximise recycling. These recycled materials represent a 60-70% carbon saving against using virgin resources. Through compliant treatment, Veolia also manages hazardous and non-recyclable waste streams that fall under the orange, yellow, red, blue and purple clinical waste categories. By developing new processes at Veolia's own facilities, this improves clinical waste hierarchy, and lowers carbon emissions by 70% (from 213 kg/CO2/tonne to 58kg/CO2/tonne) against existing services.

John Abraham, Chief Operating Officer, Industrial, Water and Energy UK, Ireland and Nordics, at Veolia said:

"We’re deeply committed to helping the NHS become the world’s first health service to reach carbon net zero by 2045, building on over 50 years’ worth of experience in advancing the sustainability of healthcare in the UK

“Our thanks to IHEEM for their recognition. We are very proud that our dedication, and that of our teams, has gained this prestigious award. Thanks also to the many partner NHS trusts that we are working with to develop these new decarbonised solutions.”

“To make a real difference and limit the damaging effects of climate change needs innovation, and this latest Award shows what we can do for the vital healthcare sector as part of our Green Up strategic programme”
