Government outlines plans to help cut energy bills. The most vulnerable households will receive £1,200 support provided in instalments over the year, shielding them from massive bill increases.
Litter strategy for England
The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) reports set out what progress has been made between 2019 and 2022 in the actions identified in the government's litter strategy. The report covers progress on educational and awareness initiatives to prevent littering. In partnership with the National Fly-Tipping Prevention Group, DEFRA has also recently released the first part of the fly-tipping toolkit, a guide on how local authorities and others can present robust cases to court.
Net Zero review launched
The government's independent review into the deliver of Net Zero climate commitments was launched today (Monday 26 September), with a focus on ensuring the UK's fight against climate change maximises economic growth, while increasing energy security and affordability for consumers and businesses. The UK has already managed to grow its economy by 76%, while cutting its emissions by over 44% since 1990. The review will identify new ways to deliver the legally binding targets by 2050 in a way that is pro-business and pro-growth.
Energy Support Plan
A replacement of the price cap with a new Energy Price Guarantee: ensuring a typical household pays an average of £2,500/year on their energy bill. Energy suppliers will be compensated for the cost of the Energy Price Guarantee. The already announced £400 Energy Bills Support Scheme will be paid in 6 instalments from October; these aim to support the most vulnerable households and encourage efficiency in our homes at a time when world events have sent them skyrocketing. The government will publish a review into the operation of the scheme in three months to inform decisions on future support after March 2023.
Home Decarbonisation Skills Training Competition
The Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) launched its £9.2m Home Decarbonisation Skills Training Competition which will fund training for people working, or who want to work, in the energy efficiency, building retrofit and low carbon heating sectors. The competition aims to increase supply chain capacity, both in terms of volume and skill level, as well as the decarbonisation of our buildings in support of the UK's Net Zero carbon emissions target.
