Working with Newlon Housing Trust
to deliver low-carbon energy through district heating
Newlon Housing Trust is a not-for-profit Community Benefit Society and a charitable housing association which owns/manages around 8,000 affordable homes, primarily in North and East London, with many more in development. These homes include affordable tenures and provide housing for people nominated from local authority waiting lists, specialised accommodation for key workers and shared-ownership homes. The Cannon Road development is part of the wider regeneration of North Tottenham, London.
The challenge
To provide the community with guaranteed energy provision that also reduces overall carbon footprint and energy costs.
The solution
Working with Newlon, Veolia manages delivery of low-carbon energy through district heating for the residents in the Cannon Road development in Haringey. The service covers supply of affordable heat to the homes located in four modern blocks and a 22-storey tower, together with a new 420-pupil school serving reception and primary schoolchildren.
The homes are provided with individually metered heating and hot water from the energy centre and residents receive their
heat for radiators and hot water from a connection to the heating network across the development. The energy is transferred to each property through a heat interface unit which takes the place of a gas boiler, and a control panel which allows residents to program their heating and hot water for when it is needed.
Under the contract, Veolia manages the energy delivery to the residents which ensures the apartments are energy efficient and comply with the latest guidelines for sustainable homes. Veolia also manages a seamless billing system which enables the energy-centre operators to interact with the customer through a messaging facility.
Value delivered
By managing energy efficient heating and hot water from the new Combined Heat and Power (CHP) based scheme, it will deliver low-carbon energy and save around 6,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions.
