OWR COMPOSTING

Veolia operates five Open Windrow Composting sites in the UK, processing over 100,000 tonnes of green and garden wastes each year.

All our facilities are PAS-100 and Quality Protocol certified and permitted to treat green and garden wastes, to be transformed into over 50,000 tonnes of compost each year.

The green waste is processed over 12 weeks.  Incoming waste is checked for contamination, shredded, formed into windrows and regularly turned to optimise the natural composting process.  Rainwater at the sites is stored and can be used in periods of dry weather to add moisture.  Finally, the product is screened to a range of grades for agricultural and domestic use.

The composted material is trademarked Pro-Grow and available across the UK.

Underground storage
170 metres below ground, we provide an innovative and secure underground storage solution for up to 100,000 tonnes of hazardous waste every year.

The worked out areas of a rock salt mine in Cheshire provide a dry, secure, gas-free storage environment for the permanent disposal of a range of solid and granular hazardous wastes.
The nature of the facility and the unique environment provides the best overall environmental option for a number of specific hazardous waste streams.

To ensure the integrity of the facility strict, site specific testing criteria are used in the pre-acceptance process, including mine condition testing. This simulates how the waste will behave in typical mine conditions and includes biodegradability testing and gas evolution tests.
Energy Recovery Facilities
ERF

Our Energy Recovery Facilities utilise world-class technology to safely transform residual waste into energy for the National Grid. We generate enough energy to power over 189,000 homes annually.

Energy Recovery makes an important contribution to reducing the UK’s long-term energy gap and helps to increase landfill diversion as part of an integrated waste management strategy.

Our ERFs operate within the emissions limits of the Waste Incineration Directive and have been recognised by all the relevant agencies as a safe, efficient method of treating waste streams that cannot be recycled.

Landfill Sites
LANDFILL

Landfill sites

Veolia operates 13 active UK landfill sites and a number of non-active sites which we continue to monitor and maintain. All are highly engineered and managed to stringent Environment Agency (EA) standards. The EA may visit any of our sites at any time for inspection or monitoring purposes and will have full access to our comprehensive site data.

Once a landfill site has reached the extent of its planning permit, we are responsible for capping it, or undertaking restoration and providing a programme of aftercare.

We work to regenerate natural habitats in a sympathetic manner that will minimise the effect of our operations on the indigenous flora and fauna and allow it to flourish.
