Peer Award win for London’s first energy from waste district heating network

Southwark Council and Veolia have won a prestigious "Peer Award for Excellence 2014", in the category of sustainability and environment.

The two organisations were awarded for their work in developing London’s first heat from waste facility which was launched last year.

The £7m scheme supplies low carbon, low cost heating and hot water to over 2,600 homes via the SELCHP energy recovery facility in south east London using non-recyclable household waste that is incinerated and converted into electricity and hot water providing a long-term, sustainable alternative to gas.

The Peer Awards celebrate real accomplishments and innovative ideas from a wide range of UK and global businesses. Winning the award proves that the huge achievement made by the Southwark and Veolia partnership in commissioning London’s first energy from waste district heating network at SELCHP, is truly innovative and ground-breaking in the UK. The scheme is one of only five in operation across Britain.

This Combined Heat and Power (CHP) scheme, generated by the incineration of domestic refuse produces low carbon energy and protects the environment, preventing 8,000tpa of CO2 and much lower nitrous oxide emissions entering the atmosphere by recovering useful energy from waste that would otherwise have been landfilled.

Robbie Jameson Veolia's General Manager of SELCHP said: ‘It’s fantastic that the scheme has been recognised for the significant benefits it delivers. The great news is there is capacity for more buildings to join the Southwark network and we are already talking to potential customers from other local developments.’

Councillor Darren Merrill, cabinet member for environment, said: 'It’s an honour to be commended with such a prestigious award. We’re extremely proud to be the first London borough to prove its commitment to green energy in this way.'
