I have a van and a car can I have a permit?

As your van is not your only form of transport in your household we are unable to supply you with a permit. However, you can apply for a one-off visit when using your van.

I have applied for a permit. How long will it take for my application to be processed?

I have applied for a permit but it has yet to arrive. I want to take a van/trailer on site – what should I do?

You will not be able to gain access to any Household Waste Recycling Centre without a valid permit or approval for a one-off visit. However you can apply for a one-off visit to use until your permit arrives.

What happens if I use all my 12 permits in less than 12 months?

The permit allows you to access your nominated Household Waste Recycling Centre on 12 occasions in any 12 month period. Once you have used up your 12 visits you will not be able to access any of the Household Waste Recycling Centres in your van or with your trailer until the 12 month period has passed. You may apply for a new permit once the 12 month period has passed.

What happens when my permit has expired and the 12 months period has passed, how do I get a new permit?

What if I visit a site more than once in a day, will I need to use a permit for each visit?

Yes, each visit will require the use of one of your 12 permits.

What if I lose my permit?

Replacement permits can be requested by contacting our Call Centre on: 0114 273 4567. There is a charge of £10 covering the cost of replacing your permit.

I have a permit but my van has been in an accident/broken down and is being repaired, can I use my permit with another vehicle?

No, the permit applies to the registered vehicle only.

I have a permit but my van has been in an accident/broken down and is being repaired, can I have a one-off permit with a vehicle I have borrowed?

No as you have a permit you will not be able to have a one-off visit.

I have a permit and I have changed my vehicle. Do I need to inform you?

Yes please. You will need to send in your permit and a copy of your new V5 documentation and you will be provided with a replacement permit booklet with the appropriate number of permits.

I have 2 vans registered to my address and both are of a type that is allowed on site with a permit. Can I have a permit for each of them?

If you have two vans you can choose to register both vans to use at your designated site. A book containing 12 permits will be provided which can be shared by both vans. You will not receive a permit booklet for each van.

Both my wife/husband/partner and I have a car with a trailer. Can we have a permit?

If you have two cars with trailers you can choose to register both vehicles to use at your designated site. A book containing 12 permits will be provided which can be shared by both vehicles. You will not receive a permit booklet for each vehicle.

I am authorised to use my works van for personal usage, I do not own my own vehicle. Can I have a permit?

No, as the vehicle is not registered to you at your home address. You may however be able to book in for a ‘one-off’ visit. Please call us on: 0114 273 4567.

I have a company car with a trailer. The car is registered to the company I work for but I am allowed personal usage. Can I have a permit?

Yes, you will need to provide proof of your address and proof from their company that you are the allocated driver of the vehicle.

I am not a resident of Sheffield but I have a van and your site is the nearest one to me. Can I apply for a permit?

No, you must be a resident of Sheffield to be eligible to apply for a permit.

I have a mobility car with trailer, I do not hold my V5, how do I apply for a van permit?

Please send us a copy of your mobility agreement which shows your car registration and address.

I have a van, my husband/wife/partner has a car registered in her name at this address. Can I have a permit for my van?

No, as you have access to another vehicle in your household you would not be allowed to apply for a permit. You can apply for up to 3 one-off visits per year for your van.

I have a van and I also have a car with a trailer. Can I have a permit for both?

As you have access to another vehicle within your household you cannot apply for a permit for your van. However you can apply for a permit for your car and trailer.

I am a trader and have a van which is registered to my business at my home address. Can I have a permit?

No. As the vehicle is registered to a business you will not be eligible to apply for a permit. However applications for up to 3 one-off visits to dispose of your household waste can still be made.
 

I have a car derived van, do I still need a permit?

If your vehicle has been modified in anyway which has resulted in permanent removal of passenger seats to allow for more load space then you will require a permit.

I have minibus/people carrier, am I allowed a permit to use a trailer?

If you have a vehicle which does not require a permit to use the sites then you will be allowed a permit for your vehicle and a trailer. However if you have a vehicle which requires a permit such as a minibus then you will not be eligible for a permit to use the centres with a trailer.

How many one-offs permit am I entitled to?

One off permits are provided for those exceptional circumstances where a larger quantity of waste is generated, such as a house move. One off visits should be just that and any more than 3 within 12 month period will be rejected.

I have hired a long Wheeled Base (LWB) van. I wasn’t aware of the restrictions, can I have a one off permit?

No LWB vans are not permitted on the sites after 30/11/09.

I have a van with a trailer, can I bring both to site?

No. Although you can access a Household Waste Recycling Centre with a van or using a car with a trailer (with the appropriate permit) access is not allowed for vans towing trailers.

Why have you introduced the total ban on LWB vans/Luton Box Vans/and twin axled vehicles from 30/11/09?

HWRCs are provided for Sheffield residents to dispose of their household waste.

When taking the decision to refuse entry for these vehicles, it was recognised that the vast majority of vehicles of this type are used for the sole purpose of trade activities and in one visit to a HWRC they can bring more waste than the average household generates in a year.
