Have you ever wondered what happens to your black bin waste or how it is used to produce heating and electricity for homes in Sheffield?
We’ll here’s your chance to find out more and ask us all your ‘burning’ questions as we open our doors to the public for one day only. Prepare to be amazed!
The Energy Recovery Facility, managed by Veolia on behalf of Sheffield City Council, has the capacity to generate enough electricity to power up to 22,600 homes and provides hot water and heating for over 150 buildings in the city including the Town Hall, the Crucible Theatre and the Winter Gardens via the award winning District Energy Network.
On Saturday 5th December we will be holding our annual Open Day which will run from 10.00 a.m. until 4.00 p.m. with regular tours of the ERF. Children are welcome, and those between the age of 7 and 15 will be able to go on a mini tour of the ERF where they can visit the Control Room and watch the crane in action . So come along to find out what happens to your waste and:
- Enjoy a behind-the-scenes tour of the facility
- Visit the Control Room
- Sit in a refuse collection vehicle
- Test the knowledge of our Waste and Recycling Teams
